Flat White, Cappuccino or Latte? A Simple Guide to Coffee Drinks

Standing at the counter and not sure what to order? The difference between a flat white, a cappuccino and a latte isn't always obvious. This short guide explains the coffee drinks on our menu at Coffee & Waffles in Prague's Old Town – and which one goes best with a waffle.

It all starts with espresso

Almost every drink on a café menu is built on espresso – a short, concentrated coffee made by pushing hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure. What changes from drink to drink is mainly how much milk is added and how much foam it has.

Flat white vs cappuccino vs latte

  • Cappuccino – the classic: espresso, milk and a generous cap of airy foam.
  • Flat white – less milk and a thin, velvety foam, so the coffee taste stands out more.
  • Caffè latte – the most milk of the three, the mildest and softest.

Rule of thumb: if you want to taste the coffee, choose a flat white. If you want something gentle and milky, go for a latte. Somewhere in between? Cappuccino. At Coffee & Waffles we use fresh farm milk for milk drinks.

Not in the mood for coffee?

We also serve matcha latte, chai latte, tea, ginger or mint tea and hot chocolate. For the youngest guests there's a babyccino – frothed milk without coffee. In autumn you'll also find seasonal drinks such as a hazelnut hojicha or hot apple cider.

What to drink with a waffle

  • Sweet waffle (pistachio, trio choco, strawberry) – an espresso, flat white or filter coffee balances the sweetness.
  • Savoury waffle or eggs Benedict – a cappuccino or caffè latte is a classic brunch pairing.
  • Warm afternoon – try an espresso tonic for something fresh.
